present progressive is used mainly in Mexico and Latin America, not Spain

both tenses are equally correct for the -ing form

 

Ejemplos:

Hablo = I speak, I do speak, I am speaking

Estoy hablando = I am speaking (right now)

 

Formation of present participle (-ing form)

AR verbs (bailar)

1. take off infinitive ending

2. add -ando = bailando
E-IE stem changers (preferir)

Change E to I = prefiriendo
ER/IR verbs (comer, escribir)

1. take off infinitive ending

2. add -iendo = comiendo, escribiendo
E-I stem changers (decir)

Change E to I = diciendo
Irregular verb Ir = yendo
O-UE stem changers (almorzar, dormir)

AR / most ER … O doesn't change = almorzando

IR / some ER … Change O to U = durmiendo
Verbs with stem ending in vowel (leer, creer)

add -yendo = leyendo, creyendo
