7th Grade Curriculum At Gaiser Middle School

LITERACY

In the 7th grade, students integrate a variety of comprehension and vocabulary strategies. They are able to adapt their reading to different types of text. Oral and written responses analyze and/or synthesize information from multiple sources to deepen understanding of the content. Students refine their understanding of the author's craft, commenting on and critically evaluating text. They will continue to analyze and/or synthesize information from multiple sources to deepen understanding of the content. Students continue to read for pleasure.

Reading

• Applies multi-syllabic decoding strategies when reading words in all literary and informational texts
• Reads aloud at the rate of 150 160 words per minute with 95% accuracy
• Builds vocabulary through reading in the content areas and study of prefixes and suffixes
• Expands comprehension by analyzing, interpreting, and synthesizing information
and ideas in literary and informational text
• Chooses to read widely from a variety of materials, including fiction and non-fiction
• Applies appropriate thinking strategies before, during, and after reading
• Increases knowledge about different features of a variety of texts

Writing

• Writes a topic sentence with details and facts that are supported by examples and explanations
• Applies appropriate conventions
• Writes for the appropriate audience
• Writes to a prompt

MATH

Number Sense

• Understand and complete tasks involving addition and subtraction on integers
and the four basic operations on non-negative rational numbers.
• Apply computational procedures with fluency on rational numbers including whole number powers
and square roots of square numbers.

Measurement

• Apply formulas to find measurements of circles, triangles, and rectangular prisms.
• Understand how the unit of measure affects the precision of measurement and why different situation
require different levels of precision.

Geometric Sense

• Understand the concept of similarity
• Understand the location of points on a coordinate grid in any of the four quadrants.

Probability and Statistics

• Understand and apply the procedure for determining the probability of multiple trials.
• Understand the concepts of complementary, independent, and mutually exclusive events.
• Apply data collection processes to inform, persuade, or answer questions.

Algebraic Sense

• Apply understanding of' linear patterns in a table, graph, or situation to develop a rule.
• Understand and apply procedures to evaluate

SCIENCE

Through Making observations and planning investigations, students build their understanding of science.
The topic of study in 7 th grade is Life science. During this course, students will:

• Understand and apply life science concepts, content, and principles;
• Apply scientific skills and procedures; and
• Participate in inquiry and scientific design.

HEALTH

Students develop the concepts and skills necessary for a safe, active and healthy life.

By the end of middle school, the student will:

• Identify positive and negative consequences of behavior choices;
• Understand the physical maturation process;
• Understand the relationship between nutrition and health;
• Identify community health resources.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

In physical education classes, students will:

• Participate in a variety of individual and team fitness activities;
• Understand the components of physical fitness; and
• Create and monitor a personal fitness plan to meet appropriate fitness standards.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Through units of study, students will build knowledge and skills in history, geography, economics, and civics with the goal of developing responsible citizenship.
