Choral Music

Students with a desire to learn how to read music and to learn vocal style and advanced techniques should enroll in Concert Choir. Students will receive help in finding their appropriate range of voice (alto, soprano, bass and tenor) as they develop as singers. Students that take part in the choir program at Gaiser can look forward to learning to sing (or to sing better) and then take those skills and put them into practice in live performances.

At the 6th grade level, students will learn proper singing technique, concert behavior, basic music reading and writing and will have the opportunity to learn a variety of music from different times, cultures and styles. 6th grade students will usually have 3 major performances a year--December, March and June.

7/8th graders students also will have 3 major performances a year. In addition, they will
take part in several field trips and assemblies. They will continue to develop their singing ability, and will learn more challenging music as the year progresses. Students are also encouraged to develop their solo abilities if desired.

By then end of middle school, choral and/or instrumental music students will:

• Read and write musical notation using whole through sixteenth notes
and rests in treble and bass clef
• Recognize, explain and apply explain musical form
• Understand and apply use of staccato/legato and accent
• Perform with expression individually or in ensemble
• Use listening skills to correct personal tone, pitch, rhythm and volume
• Apply proper audience and performance skills
